Few experiences are as terrifying as the sensation of being fully aware but unable to move or speak. This state, known as sleep paralysis, can last a few seconds to a few minutes, and it often includes vivid and scary hallucinations. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain is in the REM sleep stage, but the body is still in its "sleep mode". Essentially, one's mind wakes up before the body, causing a disconnect and trigger feelings of being trapped.
