Introduction to Pendred Syndrome
Pendred syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects the development and function of the thyroid gland. This condition, which is present from birth, is characterized by hearing loss and an enlarged thyroid gland, known as a goiter. Pendred syndrome is named after Vaughan Pendred, the physician who first described the disorder in the early 20th century. It is estimated to affect about 1 in 10,000 people worldwide.
