What is a tapeworm infection?

Tapeworm infections, also known as cestodiasis, are caused by a type of parasite called tapeworms. These parasites belong to the class Cestoda and are typically found in the intestines of humans and animals. They have a long, flat body that is made up of segments, each containing reproductive structures. Tapeworm infections can occur when a person consumes contaminated food or water, or comes into contact with infected animals or their feces.
