From Contraction to Cure
Hiccups are a common and often annoying reflex action that everyone experiences at some point in their lives. They occur when the diaphragm, a large muscle located between the chest and abdomen, suddenly contracts involuntarily. This contraction causes a sudden intake of breath, which is then abruptly cut off by the closure of the vocal cords, resulting in the characteristic 'hic' sound. While hiccups are usually harmless and resolve on their own within a few minutes or hours, they can sometimes persist for longer periods or become chronic.
